majoda I love the wonderfull piano. It is a firework of different sounds and Josh is coming up with endless ideas and such a high quality of musicality. Bass, drums and piano play so well together. Each song is so different from the one before so you won't get bored by this music for a second. The fourth song touches me deeply by its beauty so tears run down my face. Thanks to all of you.

about

Japan holds a special place in my heart. The people, the culture, the food, the history, all just magical to me. This album was made possible by one of those wonderful Japanese people, Dai Murata. With a big smile on his face, he happily spins classic jazz album while making coffee drinks for his customers in a charming little shop in Kobe called “Voice”. This guy is all about the music. He knows who played on every album, the track titles, the label imprint, everything. An encyclopedia of jazz! So when we first asked me to tour there in 2013, of course I said yes. Glad I did, because he brought me back in 2019 with my own band and recorded two of the shows. Playing pristine pianos, while eager audience members pledged us their support, in lovely venues, with the visual elements from my Discovery Project playing on a screen while we performed…wow! Going to be hard to top that tour!

Some of the selections on this album appeared on earlier records of mine. “Mint Blues” was from my 2009 I Hear a Rhapsody album, written for band that performed regularly at “The Mint” club in Los Angeles. “Reflections” is one of my favorite Thelonious Monk compositions, and it’s my first time recording it. I always loved the version by Joe Lovano from his Live at the Village Vanguard record from the mid 90s. “Atma Krandana” first appeared on my 2011 Discoveries album, and it’s an exploration of the Hindu concept of “the crying of the soul”. “Dirigibles” was also on Discoveries, and is a tribute to the floating airships of the early 20th century. “Kintugi” is a new composition; I was intrigued by this Japanese word which loosely translates to "something being stronger for having been repaired after being broken.” I composed “Introspection on 401” on the 401 highway in Canada many years ago, on a misty and mysterious morning; I continue to perform this song often. It’s from one of my early albums, 2006’s Let it Go.
